The Golden Throated Anole
A flash of movement caught my eye near the weathered wooden beam holding up the Dragon Fruit stems, and there he was - a perfect anole displaying his brilliant orange-yellow throat dewlap like a tiny sunset flag. He sat completely still, unbothered by my presence, his jewel-bright blue eye catching the dappled light filtering through the leaves above.
Time slowed as I watched this beautiful creature simply being himself in his garden world. The vibrant dewlap glowed against the brown-gray weathered wood while soft golden-green bokeh danced in the background - leaves catching morning light like scattered coins. The gentle rustle of foliage mixed with distant bird calls created the perfect soundtrack for this peaceful encounter.
What struck me most was his complete comfort in our shared space. There was something deeply calming about witnessing his morning routine - the way he positioned himself just so on the beam, the unhurried confidence of his dewlap display, that stunning turquoise eye surveying his domain. The warm, humid air carried the earthy scent of old wood warming in the morning sun and the fresh green smell of growing things after recent rain.
My nervous system settled into pure wonder and contentment as I carefully captured this moment, moving slowly and breathing quietly, not wanting to disturb this perfect little being. There was a profound sense of peaceful coexistence - of being welcomed into his world rather than being an intruder.
Sometimes the most magical encounters happen right outside your door, when you slow down enough to notice the small kings of your own backyard kingdom. This weathered beam has become one of my favorite spots to pause during morning walks, a place where wonder lives in the everyday moments between coffee and sunrise.
